Description:
Abstract: The Central Yukon study area provides breeding habitat for 28 waterfowl species. Waterfowl habitat is not uniform within the study area and is not limited to any particular vegetation classes, including those classified as wetland or aquatic habitats. Presence of predicted breeding habitat for at least one waterfowl species covers 89% of the Central Yukon study area, indicating that waterfowl species use a variety of habitat types for breeding. Low average model performance may partially contribute to the ubiquity of predicted breeding habitat in the study area. However, literature review of species habitat also indicates that waterfowl breeding habitat is varied and not always located immediately adjacent to lakes, streams, and wetlands. Predicted breeding habitat for 25% or more of waterfowl species (i.e., areas where breeding habitat overlaps for at least seven species) covered 27% of the study area. Most of the habitat for 25% of waterfowl species occurred south of the Brooks Range ecoregion, and was widespread but heterogeneous. Within the southern Brooks Range, habitat for 25% of waterfowl species was narrowly limited to riparian corridors. The Important Bird Areas designated by Audubon Alaska generally coincided with hydrologic units in which the mean overlap in species habitat was at least 25%. However, no hydrologic units with 25% mean overlap coincided with the two Important Bird Areas north of Kotzebue, likely an artifact of the shape and size of hydrologic units. Hydrologic units with 25% mean overlap also existed outside of designated Important Bird Areas within the study area.
Purpose: This dataset was developed for the BLM Rapid Ecoregional Assessment for the Central Yukon and represents 5th level hydrologic units with 25% mean overlap in breeding habitat of 28 waterfowl species in the Central Yukon study area.
Supplemental Information: Individual waterfowl species distributions were produced for the Alaska Gap Analysis Project (AKGAP). 5th level hydrologic units are from the Watershed Boundaries Dataset (part of the National Hydrography Dataset) maintained by USGS.

Attribute Accuracy Report: Individual species distribution models from the Alaska Gap Analysis Project vary in accuracy. We used classification success and area-under-curve (AUC) to assess model fit. Classification success is the percent of training points correctly predicted as present. AUC was calculated from a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) plot that was automatically generated as part of the MaxEnt output. The ROC curve is a threshold-independent measure of model accuracy, juxtaposing correct and incorrect predictions over a range of thresholds. It ranges from 0 to 1, with values larger than 0.5 indicating a performance better than random (Fielding and Bell 1997). In our case, 30% of occurrence points were held back for model testing. The MaxEnt derived AUC (or AUCpo as suggested by Yakulic et al. 2012) was only applicable to the inductive models. We used classification success as an alternative measure of model performance that could be consistently applied across all model types, and was independent of the MaxEnt AUC. Assessment datasets varied between the different model types. Since occurrence records were not used directly in the development of the deductive models, all post-filtering occurrence records were used as validation records in the assessment along with an equal number of randomly generated pseudo-absences (drawn from a pool of n=1000) across Alaska. Thus, assessment values calculated from presence and background data describe the probability that the model scores a random presence site higher than a random background site (Phillips et al. 2009). This assessment dataset was also used as validation records for the combined models. Assessment data for the inductive models were the same data held back (30%) to generate the MaxEnt AUC.
Logical Consistency Report: We conducted both internal and external review of all the range maps and distribution models. The internal review was intended primarily to ensure an adequate degree of consistency across all taxa included in the modeling effort. The purpose of the external review was to evaluate model correctness. External reviewers were solicited from individuals and groups who had expertise with particular species or taxonomic groups. Internal range map and model review was conducted iteratively, as each product reached a new stage of completion. Similar to the range map review, both deductive and inductive models were reviewed twice by the species modeling team, with changes being incorporated between each review. The combined models were only reviewed once by the species modeling team. The external review process was undertaken once the final internal review of all mapped products was completed. External review workshops were held in Anchorage (n = 4), Fairbanks (n = 2) and Juneau (n = 2). These workshops discussed the process of modeling, the limitations of the process, and the intent of the species distribution models. At that time, we asked reviewers to evaluate the taxon’s range map, wildlife habitat relationships and associated deductive model variable selections, and the three modeled outputs. We asked reviewers to comment on how well they perceived each model type to accurately reflect the taxon’s distribution and then asked them to pick the model type that was most representative of the taxon’s distribution statewide. See Appendix D of the Alaska Gap Analysis Final Report for reviewer questionnaire and other supporting documentation provided to expert participants in the review process.
Completeness Report: Distribution models were complete as of 2013. Some of the constituent models have poor accuracy and should be updated with more robust data and methods in the future to provide better representation of habitat.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Horizontal position of attributes is based on modeled results from a variety of input datasets with varying accuracy and precision. Distribution models should be regarded as estimates of habitat occurrence, not estimates of actual species occurrence. Individual species distributions vary in accuracy. See the Alaska Gap Analysis Project Species Atlas for individual accuracy assessments. Results have been generalized to the 5th level hydrologic unit. 5th level hydrologic units are accurate to the USGS original.

However the Global ASTER 60m Digital Elevation Model was one of the predictor datasets for species habitat occurrence. Process Description: The Black Scooter, Blue-winged Teal, Bufflehead, Canada Goose, Canvasback, Common Eider, Common Goldeneye, Greater Scaup, Green-winged Teal, Harlequin Duck, Lesser Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Mallard, Red-breasted Merganser, Ring-Necked Duck, Surf Scoter, Trumpeter Swan, Tundra Swan, White-winged Scoter, Cackling Goose, American Wigeon, Barrow's Goldeneye, Brant, Common Merganser, Greater White-fronted Goose, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, and Redhead Potential Breeding Habitats were all reclassified. The Central Yukon Study Area Boundary dataset served as processing extent. All reclassified waterfowl breeding habitat datasets were then added together using the Mallard Potential Breeding Habitats dataset as the snap raster, cell size 60. The combined waterfowl breeding habitat dataset was then extracted to the Central Yukon Study Area Boundary to create a waterfowl species richness dataset within the Central Yukon study area. The Black Scoter Potential Breeding Habitat dataset was used as the snap raster, cell size 60. Mean zonal statistics were then calculated for the waterfowl species richness dataset within the Central Yukon study area based on the TNMID zone field using the 5th Level Hydrologic Units as the feature zone dataset and were then reclassified to identify the predicted breeding habitat for 25% or more of waterfowl resulting in a reclassified waterfowl habitat datalayer.

Process Description: The 5th Level Hydrologic Units dataset was converted from a feature to point dataset and all fields except for the TNMID field were deleted. The reclassified waterfowl habitat datalayer was then extracted to the 5th Level Hydrologic Units point dataset resulting in a 25% waterfowl habitat by 5th level HUC datalayer.

Process Description: The 5th Level Hydrologic Units dataset was converted into a feature layer and then joined to the 25% waterfowl habitat by 5th level HUC datalayer. It was then copied, the WtrfwlHab field was added and calculated using a python script that correlated values as either "greater than or equal to 25% of Species, less than 25% of Species, and N/A".
